Cicindelidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly known as tiger beetles, recognized for aggressive predatory habits and fast running speed; the fastest known species, Rivacindela hudsoni, can run about 9 kilometers per hour, roughly 125 body lengths per second. As of 2005 about 2,600 species and subspecies were known, with the greatest diversity in the Oriental and Neotropical regions. Tiger beetles were long treated as the subfamily Cicindelinae within the ground beetle family Carabidae, but studies since 2020 have supported treating them as their own family, Cicindelidae, a sister group to Carabidae.
