Crambidae

Crambidae is a family of moths commonly known as grass moths or crambid snout moths, comprising roughly 10,347 species in over 1,000 genera divided into fifteen subfamilies. The nominal subfamily Crambinae rests folded closely against grass stems and is correspondingly inconspicuous, while other subfamilies include brightly colored and patterned species that rest with wings spread. The family is distinguished from the closely related Pyralidae by a structure called the praecinctorium, which connects the two tympanic membranes of the tympanal organ and is absent in Pyralidae. Crambidae was historically treated as a subfamily of Pyralidae, but the classification of Munroe and Solis, now widely followed, recognizes it as a distinct family.
