Crotaphytidae, the collared lizards, is a family of fast, agile desert-dwelling lizards native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, comprising two genera, Crotaphytus, the collared lizards proper, and Gambelia, the leopard lizards, with 12 living species between them. Their long limbs and tails let some species run bipedally, and they are carnivorous, feeding mainly on insects and smaller lizards. The family was established by Smith and Brodie in 1982 and is alternatively treated as the subfamily Crotaphytinae.
