Culicidae, commonly known as mosquitoes, is a family of small flies consisting of about 3,600 species, with a slender segmented body, one pair of wings, three pairs of long hair-like legs and an elongated proboscis adapted for piercing and sucking. All mosquitoes drink nectar from flowers, and females of many species also feed on blood; several species act as vectors that transmit diseases responsible for over one million human deaths each year.
