Dermestidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly known as skin beetles or carpet beetles, with other common names including larder beetles, hide or leather beetles and khapra beetles. More than 1,800 species across 74 genera have been described, dating in the fossil record to the Jurassic. Most genera are scavengers that feed on dry animal or plant material such as skin, hair, feathers, pollen, dead insects and natural fibers, and their hairy or scaly elytra often carry distinctive patterns.
