Geoemydidae, formerly known as Bataguridae, is one of the largest and most diverse families within the order Testudines, with about 70 species. These turtles inhabit the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Europe and North Africa, and encompass the Eurasian pond and river turtles as well as the Neotropical wood turtles, with the genus Rhinoclemmys as the family sole representative in Central and South America.
