Gymnophthalmidae, known as spectacled lizards or microteiids, is a family of lizards with about 265 described species across 56 genera, found across Central and South America from desert to mountain to rainforest habitats. Named for transparent, movable lower eyelids that let them see even with eyes closed, most species are ground-dwelling, egg-laying insect eaters with reduced hind rather than forelimbs, and the family is closely related to Teiidae.
