Kinosternidae is a family of mostly small turtles within the order Testudines and suborder Cryptodira, including the mud turtles and musk turtles. The family contains 25 species across four genera, which inhabit slow moving bodies of water, often with soft muddy bottoms and abundant vegetation. It was formally established by Agassiz in 1857.
