Lacertidae, known as wall lizards, true lizards or lacertas, is the dominant lizard family in Europe and is native across Afro-Eurasia, comprising about 360 species in 39 genera. Most species are under 9 centimeters long excluding the tail, though the largest, Gallotia stehlini, reaches 46 centimeters. The family is primarily insectivorous, often shows sexual dimorphism, and its earliest definitive fossils come from the early Eocene of France.
