Loxocemidae is a monotypic family containing a single species, Loxocemus bicolor, commonly called the Mexican python or Mexican burrowing python. It lives along the Pacific side of Mexico at low to moderate elevation, from Nayarit south through Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Morelos, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas, and on into Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It has a shovel shaped snout, a narrow head and small eyes suited to its terrestrial, semi fossorial habits, a stout muscular body reaching about 1 to 1.3 meters, and dark coloring broken by white scale patches. DNA evidence places it as the closest relative of the true pythons and the sunbeam snakes, even though it forms its own separate family.
