Passalidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera established by Leach in 1815 and known variously as bessbugs, bess beetles, betsy beetles or horned passalus beetles. Nearly all of the roughly 500 species are tropical, and North American species are notable for their size of 20 to 43 millimeters, a single horn on the head, and a form of social behavior unusual among beetles. The family dates in the fossil record to the Cenomanian stage of the Cretaceous.
