Scincidae, the skinks, is one of the most diverse lizard families, with more than 1,500 described species across about 100 genera grouped into seven subfamilies. Skinks have proportionally smaller legs than most lizards and occur nearly worldwide in deserts, mountains and grasslands, living as terrestrial, burrowing or arboreal animals in every region except the polar and boreal zones.
