Staphylinidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly known as rove beetles. They are recognized by short elytra that leave more than half of the abdominal segments exposed, and the family comprises more than 68,000 described species across roughly 4,100 genera, making it one of the largest families of any organism. Rove beetles first appear in the fossil record in the Middle Jurassic and were described by Pierre Andre Latreille in 1802. A well known member is the devils coach horse beetle, Ocypus olens.
