Tenebrionidae is a family of beetles in the order Coleoptera commonly called darkling beetles. The family comprises more than 20,000 species with a cosmopolitan distribution and dates back in the fossil record to the Late Jurassic. Its name comes from Latin for lover of darkness, reflecting the many species that live in dark places, though some genera such as Stenocara and Onymacris are active during the day.
