Tropiduridae, known as Neotropical ground lizards, is a family of largely ground-dwelling iguanian lizards native to South America, Trinidad and the Galapagos Islands, with eight recognized genera. The family includes species adapted to cold high-altitude environments such as the Andes and Tierra del Fuego, some of which reproduce by live birth rather than laying eggs, and a 2021 study identified a specialized epidermal gland in at least 39 species thought to aid chemical communication.
