Arachis

Arachis is a genus of annual and perennial flowering plants, family Fabaceae, comprising approximately 70 species, native to South America and recently assigned to the informal monophyletic Pterocarpus clade of the tribe Dalbergieae. The peanut, Arachis hypogaea, is a major food crop species of global importance, and some other species are cultivated for food in South America on a limited scale; Arachis pintoi is cultivated worldwide as a forage and soil conditioner plant, providing high-protein feed for livestock and nitrogen enrichment in agroforestry and permaculture systems. Various Arachis species serve as food plants for certain moth species, including the flame shoulder, the nutmeg and the turnip moth.
