Aster is a genus of perennial flowering plants, family Asteraceae, with a circumscription that has been narrowed over time; as of August 2024, Plants of the World Online accepted 186 species, of which all but one, Aster alpinus, are restricted to Eurasia, since many species formerly placed in Aster are now classified in other genera of the tribe Astereae. The name derives from Ancient Greek for star, referencing the flower head shape, and many varieties are popular garden plants sometimes called Michaelmas daisies for their late-season blooming, with the type species being Aster amellus.
