Gossypium is a genus of flowering plants in the tribe Gossypieae of the mallow family, Malvaceae, order Malvales, from which cotton is harvested. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of both the Old and New Worlds, the genus contains roughly 50 to 55 accepted species, the largest genus in its tribe, with new species continuing to be identified. Cotton is the primary natural fibre used by humans today, amounting to about 80 percent of world natural fibre production.
