Hyla

Hyla is a genus of tree frogs, family Hylidae, comprising 17 extant species following a major taxonomic revision that redistributed over 300 species once placed here into other genera; the genus was established by Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in 1768 and its fossil record extends from the Eocene to the present. It is now native to Europe, northern Africa and Asia, though historically the older, broader genus spanned Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas before the revision. The genus name honors Hylas of Greek mythology, companion of Hercules, and a typical member is the European tree frog, distributed across numerous European and Mediterranean countries.
