Mammillaria is one of the largest genera in the cactus family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae, tribe Cacteae, with currently about 170 to 190 accepted species and around 99 subspecies according to Plants of the World Online. Most species are native to Mexico, though some occur in the southwestern United States, the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America. The common name pincushion cactus applies to this genus and the related genus Escobaria.
