Oryza

Oryza is a genus of plants in the grass family, Poaceae, subfamily Oryzoideae, tribe Oryzeae, encompassing the major food crops rice, Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima. Members grow as tall wetland grasses reaching one to two metres in height, with both annual and perennial species represented; the Kew World Checklist recognizes around 20 distinct species, though sources disagree on the exact count and over 300 names have been proposed for taxa within the genus. Species are distributed across tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, Madagascar, South America and the Caribbean.
