Phaseolus

Phaseolus is a genus of flowering plants, family Fabaceae, comprising approximately 70 species of herbaceous to woody annual and perennial vines, commonly called bean or wild bean, native to the Americas, primarily Mesoamerica, with all species endemic only to the New World according to modern taxonomic understanding. Five species have been domesticated since pre-Columbian times: the tepary bean, runner bean, year bean, lima bean and common bean; the common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris, is the most economically significant, cultivated worldwide in tropical, semitropical and temperate climates, and the genus as a whole is one of the most economically important legume genera.
