Sequoiadendron

Sequoiadendron is a genus of evergreen conifers, family Cupressaceae, containing three species in the fossil record but functionally monotypic today, with only Sequoiadendron giganteum surviving to the present, growing naturally in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Commonly known as wellingtonia, giant redwood or giant sequoia, the living species is the largest tree by volume in the world. The genus fossil record extends back to the Late Cretaceous and once spanned the Northern Hemisphere, including sites in the Caucasus region of Georgia.
