Somatohelix

Somatohelix is a genus of tubular, helically coiled fossil organism of uncertain biological affinity from the late Ediacaran of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, dating to about 555 million years ago. Known from specimens 50 to 150 millimeters long and 3 to 7 millimeters wide, and containing a single species, S. sinuosus, it was first found in 1969 but not formally named until 2011. Better preserved material later confirmed it as a genuine body fossil rather than a trace left by another animal moving through sediment, though what kind of organism made it remains unknown.
