Sorghum is a genus of flowering plants, family Poaceae, subfamily Panicoideae, tribe Andropogoneae, comprising about 28 species. Seventeen of the twenty eight are native to Australia, with the remaining species extending across Africa, Asia, Mesoamerica and islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The genus sits within the PACMAD clade of grasses and is closely related to maize. The cultivated species Sorghum bicolor, known by names including durra, jowari and milo, originated in the Sahel region of Africa and is grown worldwide as a cereal for human consumption and as animal fodder; Sorghum halepense, Johnson grass, has become naturalized across multiple continents as a weed.
