Triturus

Triturus is a genus of newts, family Salamandridae, order Urodela, comprising the crested newts and marbled newts, nine recognized species in total, seven crested and two marbled, after taxonomic revisions split off several former members into separate genera. These large-bodied amphibians develop aquatically as larvae and return to water annually to breed, typically measuring 10 to 16 centimeters, with some crested species reaching 20 centimeters; males develop jagged crests during the breeding season, and coloring includes dark brown bodies with yellow-orange, black-marked bellies in crested species and green-black marbled patterns in marbled species. The genus ranges across Eurasia, from Great Britain and the Iberian Peninsula in the west to West Siberia and the southern Caspian Sea region in the east, extending north to central Scandinavia.
