Chromista is a proposed kingdom of single celled and multicellular eukaryotes, refined from the earlier concept of Chromalveolata, uniting organisms whose photosynthetic plastids share chlorophyll c and are bound by four membranes, thought to trace back to a shared red algal endosymbiosis; many non photosynthetic members are believed to have secondarily lost that ability. The kingdom remains controversial, since its member groups may instead have arisen independently from the last common eukaryotic ancestor rather than forming one natural group.
