Aquifoliales is an order of flowering plants comprising the holly family, Aquifoliaceae, together with Helwingiaceae, a small group of temperate Asian shrubs, Phyllonomaceae, a group of Central American trees and shrubs, and Stemonuraceae and Cardiopteridaceae, both added to the order in 2001. The APG II system formally recognized this grouping in 2003; under the earlier Cronquist system these families were classified separately, with Aquifoliaceae placed in Celastrales and the others positioned elsewhere.
