Canellales

Canellales is an order of flowering plants recognized by the APG IV system as one of four orders within the magnoliids, comprising two families, Canellaceae and Winteraceae, totaling roughly 136 species of fragrant trees and shrubs. Canellaceae occurs in tropical America and Africa, while Winteraceae forms part of the Antarctic flora across several southern hemisphere regions. The two families were long thought unrelated, with Winteraceae considered primitive on the basis of its wood and carpel structure, until molecular and morphological studies from 1999 onward established their close relationship.
