Malpighiales is one of the largest orders of flowering plants, containing about 36 families and more than 16,000 species, representing roughly 7.8 percent of all eudicots. Its members are morphologically diverse and include willows, violets, poplars, coca, cassava, rubber trees, and passionfruit, with relationships among them recognized mainly through molecular phylogenetics rather than shared physical traits. The order sits within the rosid clade of eudicots, and its largest family, Euphorbiaceae, alone contains roughly 7,500 species across 300 genera.
