Malvales is an order of flowering plants comprising about 6,000 species across nine families under the APG II classification, dominated by the broadly defined mallow family Malvaceae with over 4,225 species, followed by Thymelaeaceae with 898 species. Its members are mostly shrubs and trees of tropical and subtropical regions, with some reaching into temperate zones, and the order includes economically important plants such as cacao, cotton, hibiscus and durian.
