Parasitiformes is the other of the two mite superorders, distinguished from Acariformes by the absence of actinochitin and trichobothria, indistinct body segmentation, and sperm transfer by spermatophore rather than direct copulation. More than 12,000 species have been described, with total estimates ranging from 100,000 to 200,000. Its best known members are the ticks of order Ixodida, though the largest group by described species is the order Mesostigmata, with more than 8,000 species.
