Proteales is an order of flowering plants comprising three or four families in the eudicot clade, including Proteaceae, Platanaceae, Nelumbonaceae, and Sabiaceae. Its members range from South African proteas and Australian banksias and macadamias to planetrees and the sacred lotus, with Proteaceae concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere and Platanaceae and Nelumbonaceae in the Northern Hemisphere. Fossil evidence traces the order back to the Early Cretaceous, roughly 121 to 126 million years ago.
