Spirulida is an order of cephalopods represented today by a single living species, Spirula spirula, alongside a number of extinct taxa recorded from the Late Jurassic onward. The order is organized into three suborders, two of them extinct, Groenlandibelina and Belopterina, and one, Spirulina, containing the surviving lineage. The living species belongs to the family Spirulidae, within the superorder Decapodiformes of the class Cephalopoda, and is the last survivor of a lineage with a fossil record stretching back well over a hundred million years.
