Vampyromorphida is an order of cephalopods within class Cephalopoda, superorder Octopodiformes, comprising a single known extant species, the vampire squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, along with many extinct taxa spanning multiple suborders and a fossil record reaching back to the Jurassic. The living species somewhat resembles an octopus, its closest relative, but carries distinctive webbed arms and cirri-like projections, and it inhabits deep-sea conditions, occupying a competition-free niche where few predators or competitors can follow.
