Bathyarchaeota is a phylum of archaea, formerly grouped informally as the Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group, that is now recognized as one of the most abundant and widespread archaeal lineages in marine sediments worldwide. Bathyarchaeota are found buried deep in seafloor sediments where they are thought to survive on very limited energy by breaking down detrital organic matter, and because almost none have been cultured, the biology of the phylum is known mainly through DNA recovered directly from sediment samples.
