Cercozoa is a diverse phylum of single celled eukaryotic organisms, many of them amoeboid or flagellated, that are found throughout soil, freshwater, and marine environments and play a significant role as predators of bacteria and other microorganisms in these ecosystems. The group includes organisms with widely varying forms, some naked and some building shells from foreign particles or their own secreted material, and members are united mainly by genetic relationships rather than by a single shared visible body plan.
