Lokiarchaeota is a phylum of archaea discovered through DNA sequences recovered from deep sea sediment near a hydrothermal vent system in the Arctic Ocean, from which it takes its name. Lokiarchaeota belongs to the broader Asgard archaea group and attracted wide scientific attention because its genome contains genes for proteins previously thought unique to eukaryotic cells, making it and its Asgard relatives central to current hypotheses about how the first eukaryotic cells evolved from an archaeal ancestor.
