Nanoarchaeota is a phylum of archaea represented by extremely small cells that live as obligate symbionts attached to the surface of another archaeon, Ignicoccus. The phylum was first discovered at a submarine hydrothermal vent, and its member Nanoarchaeum equitans is among the smallest known cellular organisms.
