Radiolaria is a phylum of single-celled marine protists that build intricate skeletons, usually made of silica, and extend fine needle-like pseudopods through the skeleton to capture food. Over long geological timescales the mineral skeletons of dead radiolarians accumulate on the ocean floor as a fine sediment called siliceous ooze.
