The common buzzard is a medium-sized bird of prey in the genus Buteo, family Accipitridae, with a wide range across Europe and the Palearctic as far as northwestern China, western Siberia and northwestern Mongolia. Across most of its range it remains resident year-round, but birds breeding in the colder north and in the eastern part of the range typically migrate south for the winter, some traveling as far as South Africa.
