Accipitridae is one of four families within the order Accipitriformes, comprising small to large birds of prey with strongly hooked bills and varied morphology suited to their diet, among them hawks, eagles, kites and harriers. The family contains 256 species divided into 12 subfamilies and 75 genera, and has a cosmopolitan distribution, found on every continent except Antarctica as well as a number of oceanic island groups.
