White-tailed eagle

The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), also called the sea eagle, is a large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, found across temperate Eurasia from Greenland and Iceland east to Hokkaido, Japan. It inhabits areas near large bodies of water, including coastal and freshwater sites, and requires old-growth trees or sea cliffs for nesting, feeding mainly on fish and water birds. Habitat destruction, historical persecution and pesticide contamination caused significant population declines, but protection, habitat conservation and reintroduction programs have restored populations in parts of its range. It is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
