Utricularia vulgaris is an aquatic species of bladderwort found in Asia and Europe. It is free-floating and puts down no roots; its stems can grow more than a metre long in a single season before dying back and forming turions in winter, and its finely divided leaves, one to eight centimetres long, carry many bladder-like traps. Its yellow flowers are borne on stalks above the water surface between April and August, while the related species Utricularia macrorhiza takes its place in eastern Asia and North America.
