The Gulf torpedo, Torpedo sinuspersici, is a species of electric ray in the family Torpedinidae, order Torpediniformes. It has a rounded pectoral fin disc about 84 percent as wide as it is long and a short stocky tail, growing up to 130 centimeters though most individuals are under 100 centimeters, with a base brown color marked by thick cream or white vermiculations and cream colored irregular spots. It is the most widespread electric ray in the western Indian Ocean, found from South Africa through the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf to Sri Lanka and the Andaman Sea, in shallow sandy areas on and near coral reefs and offshore to depths of 150 meters, often burying itself in the sandy bottom of gullies and estuaries. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, in part because the species may actually represent a group of several closely related local species.
