The Andean flamingo is the rarest of the world's flamingo species, found in the high-altitude salt lakes and lagoons of the Andes in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, generally at elevations above 3,000 meters. It is distinguished from other flamingos by its yellow legs and feet, in contrast to the pink or red legs of most other species. Its diet consists mainly of diatoms and other algae filtered from the water through a specialized bill, and it breeds in large colonies on the shores of these remote alkaline lakes.
