Beauveria bassiana is a fungus that causes disease in a wide range of insects, infecting its host when spores land on and penetrate the insect's outer cuticle, then grows throughout the body cavity until the insect dies and a covering of white fungal growth emerges over the cadaver, giving the disease its name, white muscardine disease. Because of this broad insect-killing ability, it is widely produced and applied commercially as a biological alternative to chemical insecticides in agriculture and pest control.
