Sordariomycetes is a large class of fungi within the phylum Ascomycota, encompassing a highly diverse group of molds, plant pathogens and endophytes found in soil, decaying plant matter and living hosts worldwide. Members typically produce their sexual spores in flask-shaped fruiting structures called perithecia. The class includes economically important genera such as Fusarium, a widespread cause of crop disease, and Neurospora, long used as a model organism in genetics research.
