Cryphonectria parasitica is a pathogenic fungus in the phylum Ascomycota, native to East Asia and Southeast Asia, that causes chestnut blight. Introduced into Europe and North America in the early twentieth century, it spread through susceptible chestnut populations and caused significant tree loss in both regions, with different strains of the fungus varying in virulence.
