Home›Ferns and Fern Allies›Horsetails (Equisetum)GroupHorsetails (Equisetum)This group gathers Ferns and Fern Allies subcategory members belonging to the genus Equisetum, the horsetails, the sole surviving genus of an ancient lineage of vascular plants that was far more diverse and, in several extinct relatives, far larger during the Carboniferous period, when some tree-sized relatives formed a substantial part of the swampy forests that later became coal deposits. Recognizable by hollow, jointed, ridged stems, often with whorls of thin, needle-like branches radiating from each joint, and stem tissue reinforced with silica deposits that made horsetails a traditional natural material for scouring pots and polishing metal and wood before manufactured abrasives became widely available. Horsetails reproduce through spores released from a distinctive cone-like structure at the tip of certain stems, and several species spread aggressively through an extensive underground rhizome system that makes an established colony notoriously difficult to eradicate once it takes hold.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSpores 2Browse ByAll Horsetails (Equisetum)Horsetails (Equisetum)22 entriesHorsetails (Equisetum)Filter Results22 entriesCommon GroupAllHorsetails (Equisetum) (22)TaxonomyAllPlantae (8)Polypodiopsida (3)HabitatAllBog (3)Desert (1)Fen (4)Freshwater Marsh (2)Grassland (2)Lake (1)River (3)Temperate Forest (3)Tundra (1)Wetlands (4)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (10)Not Evaluated (8)EcosystemAllAtacama Desert (1)Moorland (1)Everyday GroupAllHorsetails (Equisetum) (22)DietAllPhotosynthetic Autotroph (22)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (14)Terrestrial (20)Relationship to PeopleAllEaten or Drunk by People (3)Invasive or Introduced Species (6)Used in Traditional Medicine (12)Living or ExtinctAllYes (14)Where It LivesAllAfghanistan (5)Africa (2)Albania (11)Algeria (3)Angola (2)Australia (2)Austria (14)Bangladesh (5)Belarus (13)Belgium (13)Belize (2)Bolivia (5)Botswana (2)Brazil (3)Bulgaria (11)Burundi (2)Cambodia (2)Canada (5)Colombia (4)Costa Rica (4)Cuba (2)Cyprus (5)Denmark (13)Dominican Republic (2)Ecuador (4)El Salvador (3)Eswatini (2)Ethiopia (2)Fiji (2)Finland (12)France (13)Georgia (3)Germany (13)Greece (12)Guatemala (4)Guyana (2)Haiti (2)Honduras (3)Hungary (12)Iceland (11)India (5)Iran (8)Iraq (4)Ireland (12)Italy (13)Jamaica (3)Japan (13)Kazakhstan (10)Kenya (1)Kuwait (1)Laos (2)Lesotho (1)Libya (2)Luxembourg (1)Madagascar (1)Malawi (1)Manchuria (11)Mauritania (1)Mongolia (12)Morocco (2)Mozambique (1)Myanmar (4)Namibia (1)Nepal (4)Netherlands (11)Nicaragua (2)North America (15)Norway (10)Oman (1)Pakistan (4)Palestine (2)Paraguay (1)Peru (3)Philippines (1)Poland (10)Portugal (4)Romania (10)Saudi Arabia (1)South America (4)South Asia (11)Spain (8)Sweden (10)Switzerland (9)Thailand (1)Tunisia (1)Ukraine (8)United Kingdom (1)United States (3)Uruguay (2)Uzbekistan (2)Venezuela (3)Vietnam (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 22Andean HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies1 linkAtacama Desert Giant HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies3 linksBranched HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies1 linkDwarf HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies3 linksEquisetum ArvenseFerns and Fern Allies2 linksEquisetum palustreFerns and Fern Allies6 linksField HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksGreat HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksHimalayan HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies1 linkHorsetailFerns and Fern Allies10 linksMarsh HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies6 linksMeadow HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksMexican Giant HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies1 linkNorthern Giant HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksRough HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksScouring RushFerns and Fern Allies1 linkScouringrush HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksSmooth HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksSouthern Giant HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies1 linkVariegated HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksWater HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies2 linksWood HorsetailFerns and Fern Allies3 linksSources1.
